The city of Coral Gables is looking pretty good for 90. The original charter for “The City Beautiful” was approved by the Florida Legislature on this day in 1925. Over the next year, Coral Gables will mark nine decades with a series of entertaining and educational events meant to honor visionary founder George Merrick. Working with a team of creative designers, the legendary real estate developer amassed more than 1,200 acres of tropical wilderness and transformed the area into a lavish city with canopied boulevards, imposing archways, old-world plazas, and quaint Spanish homes. Merrick and his colleagues scrutinized every detail of the city, down to the corner lampposts and color schemes on the buildings. Many of those exacting standards are followed to this day, keeping Coral Gables one of the most beautiful cities in America.
