The eccentric city of Key West has introduced a dose of South Beach to the island with the opening of its newest boutique hotel.

One hundred rooms inspired by the vibe of Ernest Hemingway await guests at The Gates Hotel on North Roosevelt Boulevard. Here, you won’t find the design fallback of pastels and sea shells found at so many other properties on the island. Instead, the residential-style interiors are described as “a mix of contemporary luxury with a hint of Floridian flair.”

Rooms are minimalist with a tropical vibe that include custom platform beds made of hand-washed pine, petrified wood tables imported from Bali, and original pieces by award-winning local photographer Jorge de la Torriente.

Adjacent to the hotel’s pool deck, Rum Row pays homage to the Prohibition Era through partnerships with First Legal Rum Distillery and Rodriguez Cigar Factory, offering guests one-of-a-kind on-site experiences. And the hotel’s concierge can arrange local adventures from seaplane tours and parasailing to snorkeling and deep-sea fishing.
