Skip’s Bar and Grill is a popular dive bar in Dunedin. It’s taken on landmark status in recent years thanks to the building’s unique exterior. On the wall fronting Douglas Avenue is a colorful, one-of-a-kind mural dedicated to man’s best friend. Dozens and dozens and dozens of them. “Welcome to Dogedin,” as the top of the mural says. This extraordinary, whimsical piece was the creation of local artist Anna Hamilton Fields, whose work can be seen on buildings throughout Dunedin. It started out in 2010 with portraits of nearly 130 dogs belonging to area residents. Owners donated money to have their pooches incorporated into the mural with funds going to a doggie rescue organization. The mural continued to grow with pets of all varieties including cats, birds, pigs and even sugar gliders and spread to the bar’s back wall facing the alleyway. The mural has since spawned Murals for Mutts, a non-profit organization that raises money for animal welfare by painting pet portraits and murals in communities across the nation.
