There’s a sweet shop in Pass-a-Grille that’s known more for its delectable drinks than its candy. Located steps from the Gulf waters on Pass-a-Grille’s main drag, Paradise Sweets bills itself as a dessert restaurant, candy store and ice cream parlor. The logo on the door only features a simple ice cream cone. But upon entering the small cafe, it’s immediately clear by the heavy aroma of roasting coffee beans that the logo should instead be a cup and saucer. The chalk boards above the counter list a number of specialty drinks, from coffees and teas to Hawaiian shaved ice. But most customers come for the “Pass-a-cino.” This is the owner’s take on the popular cold coffee drink popularized by Starbucks. He roasts his own beans to make a potent espresso. The espresso is blended with ice cream of the customer’s choice (salted caramel is the best) to make the boldest cold coffee drink ever concocted. Even the biggest coffee snob will be blown away by the incredibly strong taste.
