Almost directly beneath the Interstate 4 on-ramp from Highway 17 at the St. Johns River sits a curious roadside attraction.
A giant replica of an MTV Moonman is safely locked inside the lot at Acme Industrial Surplus in Sanford. But if you’re traveling on Orange Boulevard or SunRail between the Sanford Station and the DeBary Station, you’ll likely see him. He’s hard to miss.
The 15-foot styrofoam silver astronaut has been towering over the business’ fence for several years and has become a popular photo-op for roadside attraction seekers.
But did the Sanford Moonman ever have anything to do with the cable music channel?
Actually, he did. Back in 2004, he was used for the MTV Music Awards when they were held at the American Airlines Arena in Miami. The event was notable because it was the first time the ceremony was held outside of New York City and Los Angeles. And just to make you feel old, OutKast took home Video of the Year for “Hey Ya!”
