Just a few years ago, the historic 1920s building known as the 5 Points Theatre in Jacksonville’s Riverside neighborhood was being used as an uninspiring event space. At one time, the Gothic Revival structure housed a nightclub and had a less-than-stellar reputation in the community.
Then, in 2011, Jacksonville native Tim Massett turned to online crowdsourcing and private loans to purchase the venue. Massett spent time renovating the movie house with a larger screen, tiered seating and sound dampening material on the walls.
It was reborn the Sun-Ray Cinema.
Today, the theater is the best place to go in the 904 to catch new releases and cult films. Massett has added a second screen allowing for more eclectic fare to be shown.
Many of the Sun-Ray faithful will tell you what really sets the place apart from the modern cineplex is the high-quality food available at the concession stand. Where else in Jacksonville can you go to watch a movie and chow down on a Wildly “Inauthentic” Cuban Sandwich, snack on hummus with veggies, or have a pizza with out-there toppings like kimchi. Plus, they serve their seasoned popcorn in real bowls!
Sun-Ray Cinema is located at 1028 Park St in Jacksonville.
